It seems one can only entertain two possibilities of end of season outcome if you’re a Sunderland fan these days, promotion success from the Championship, or relegation heartache (or embarassment in this case)from the Premiership.
This week’s poll asks you, which do you prefer?
Assuming Jesus isn’t a Sunderland fan and the Black Cats don’t stay up by some form of miracle this year, the last 10 years following Sunderland has seen 2 relegations from the Premiership, 3 promotions back there as champions, and 2 play off heartaches. The 3 years of Premiership consolodation seem like a fantasy these days and are certainly a long way off coming back to Wearside.
This constant yo-yoing takes long-suffering Sunderland fans from one extreme emotion to the other in a matter of months. Sunderland just simply don’t do things by half. As we have seen this year, a team of worshipped heroes can quite easily be transformed into a team of inept goons lambasted by their previously adoring crowd.
It may be an obvious question to some, and the results of this poll should prove interesting. The question is, which type of season do you prefer?
Is it the season as an all conquering Championship side that wins most weeks and storms to promotion to the Premiership, or is it the season that invariably follows, of relegation despair and heartache that sees very few wins or happy moments but still holds the advantage of having a Premiership team. And when those happy moments do come (for example at Boro away this season), boy are they cherished.
Or are you happy as it is? As a mix of both? The seasonal polar contrasts of emotions is what it is all about as a Sunderland fan, and the lows make you appreciate the highs more often. Who wants to be a regular successful Premiership side anyway?….
Of course being ‘a regular successful Premiership side’ could well be an option on the poll, but let’s be honest, like i’ve said, that doesn’t look like happening any time soon so we’ll leave that one for now.
