44% of you that voted in this week’s fans poll voted ‘yes’ when asked if you wanted the former Sunderland striker installed as manager…

Only days after Mick McCarthy’s sacking on Wearside, fans favourite Niall Quinn’s odds for the job fell dramatically from 50/1 to 4/1 favourite at the bookies, following strong rumours that he was keen on taking over at The Stadium of Light.

Therefore the simple question was put to you, the fans:

Should Niall Quinn be the next SAFC boss?
-Yes 44%
-Only if under a new board 28%
-No 26%
-Not sure 2%

With 44% of you voting yes, it would seem that Quinny’s appointment would indeed be a popular one on Wearside, one of a few names that could raise the spirit of a vastly disheartened fan base.

However rumours of Quinn joining have always come hand in hand with rumours of rich Irish benefactors following him into the club. While this may well simply be wishful thinking on the part of Sunderland supporters, it was a widely held belief that Quinn would accept the job under new management at the club, with his relationship with the current board said to be frosty.

While this suggestion was recently refuted by some sections of the media, in particular The Guardian newspaper – for whom Quinn writes a weekly column – it did nonetheless provoke 28% of you to vote for Quinny in, but only under a new board.

This may also be wishful thinking on the part of fans, with an increasingly vocal number of them voicing their dissatisfaction at the way the club is being run, culminating in this season’s disastrous campaign.

With only 2% of you unsure, the remaining 26% voted a resounding no, with several possible reasons for this. Some may well feel that Quinny is just not management material, that his mild manner and gentleman image just wouldn’t fit the bill for the job.

Others may not doubt his management credentials, but with the job being the challenge it is, would not want Quinny to undertake it simply to preserve his reputation in Sunderland and nationally, in case it did result in failure.

While the jury is out as to whether he’d be the right man for us, one thing is for certain, if Quinny did get the job, no poll would be necessary to find the percentage of fans backing him and wanting him to succeed. We already know that answer. 110%
