Lee Cattermole has today signed a new five year contract extension with Sunderland.

The 27 year old who came very close to joining Stoke City before Gus Poyet started to get the best out of him, is now tied to the club util the end of summer 2021.

Dick Advocaat was delighted that the midfield general had decided to commit to Sunderland in such a big way as the Dutchman views Cattermole as a major player in there forthcoming Premier League seasons.

He told the club’s website:‘Lee is the controller of the side. He is a motivator, a leader and central to the success of our team. To know that he will be with us for many years to come is very important to the club.’

Its a full circle turnaround for the player after he was left to rot in the reserve side under the questionable leadership of Paolo di Canio, he even insisted that the player did his training with the youth side.

But he was promoted back to the senior side by Poyet and played a starring role in Sunderland avoiding the drop. Now, under the leadership of Dick Advocaat, Cattermole is once again at his very best and hopefully will be for a few years yet.
