Sunderland have signed their second player of the summer, completing a deal to bring Celtic defender Adam Matthews to the Stadium of Light for a fee of £2m.

The 23 year old has signed a four year deal with the Black Cats, keeping him in the red and white stripes until 2019.

Sunderland boss Dick Advocaat told the club’s website: ‘We know that we need quality players to improve competition for places in the side, so Adam is a welcome addition to our squad and we are very pleased to welcome him to Sunderland.’

Lee Congerton was delighted that they had got their man and he admitted that the signing brings to an end months of hard work in which time was spent tracking the player.

The right back has over 100 games under his belt for the Scottish giants since making a move up north from Cardiff City in 2011, he is also a Welsh international.

Matthews is the second defender to join Sunderland in the last few days with Sebastian Coates joining the club on a four year deal this week.
