Alan Shearer’s affiliation with Newcastle will leave some struggling to agree with him, but can anyone really say they would disagree Sunderland have been ‘disgraceful’ this season and the performance against Swansea wasn’t ‘pathetic’ on Saturday?

Relegated when we still have four games to play, Sunderland’s team, as it is, wouldn’t manage to get promotion from the Championship next season as far as Shearer’s concerned.

He told Match of the Day: ‘There is no way that team will get back up into the Premier League.’

On Saturday’s pitiful showing, the last of the season at the Stadium of Light when you would expect some effort and fight as the minimum, Sunderland bowed out with a whimper.

Booed off – both at half time and full time – former England captain Shearer said the performance had been ‘absolutely disgraceful’ and warranted the reaction from the stands.

‘In the first half they were absolutely disgraceful – there was a complete lack of effort. It’s the last home game of the season, they’ve been relegated, and you’d think they’d give their fans something to shout about.’

The fans have made their discontent towards David Moyes clear, he is adamant he’ll continue next season. The Sunderland boss, along with owner Ellis Short, deserve all the criticism they get in the eyes of Shearer – who feels the Black Cats’ fans should be demanding their money back.

Shearer said: ‘It was lazy. There was nothing in their performance at all. I’m surprised the fans lasted so long – they should be asking for their money back, it was that bad.’
