Going into the game unbeaten in three, Sunderland fielded Grant Leadbitter, Christian Bassilla, Ben Alnwick and Neil Collins, who all played 90 minutes in Southport tonight.
In a scrappy encounter, Ian Graham, Jake Richardson and Billy Dennehy came close to breaking the deadlock for the visitors in first half, while Grant Leadbitter came closest in the second half with a one on one chance and a well struck free kick that flashed just wide of goal late on in the game.
Everton had a late penalty appeal turned down as the match petered out to finish 0-0.
