Poyet Praises Player of the Month Winner

Gus Poyet says Connor Wickham is very deserving of the praise he has been receiving after winning the Barclay’s Player of the Month gong.

Wickham picked up the award after being the main reason Sunderland climbed out of the relegation zone last week to stand a chance of survival when relegation looked inevitable.

Wickham was recalled from Leeds and thrown straight into the battle and soon started knocking in the goals last month, he scored five including a brace against Man City and one against Chelsea as the Black Cats became the first side to win at Stamford Bridge since Jesus used to attend.

Sunderland now have a tricky game at Old Trafford to deal with before two home games on the bounce against West Brom and Swansea.

Speaking about Wickham, Poyet said: “It is a fantastic achievement for Connor, and he deserves the award.

“His goals have helped us turn things around, and have given us a real chance of staying up now.”
