Left-back Patrick van Aanholt has joined Sunderland today from Premier League rivals Chelsea.

The fee is undisclosed but the contract is for four years and he will give the club a massive boost to the defence, namely the left back position which has been a problem area for Gus Poyet.

The 23-year-old has only made eight appearances for Chelsea, but he was out on loan last season to Vitesse and has had loan spells in English football at Newcastle, Leicester, Coventry and Wigan.

Whether this signing means the end of Gus Poyet’s interest in Marcos Alonso remains to be seen but he may have a battle on his hands with Fiorentina saying that they don’t want to sell.

But van Aanholt will join his new team mates in Portugal when they start their tour with a game against Recreativo de Huelva on Tuesday.

As much as I love the return of drogba, it hurts at the way the club treats our young prospects. Van anholt sold for mere 1.5million euros without even given any chance to try and show his worth! Its shameful and hurting! Wish you well van anholt

Billy Jones and Patrick van Aanholt, only scored once for West Brom and Chelsea respectively. Both against Newcastle.
