Mick Out…

That’s the view of 55% of you who voted for Mick ‘to be sacked immediately’ in the last poll.

After a dismal campaign that has resulted in only 2 wins all season, both away from home, once again Sunderland are destined for the drop. Yet despite this, 38% of you still want Mick in the job, as our results show:

What should happen to Mick?
-Sack him now 55%
-Keep him. He can bring us back up 38%
-Sack him in the summer 7%

The facts are this, Played 27, Won 2, Drawn 4, Lost 21. It’s not pretty. Add to that the 9 Premiership games that McCarthy was in charge for in Sunderland’s last Premiership campaign, and the former Republic of Ireland boss can only claim 10 top flight points from a possible 108.

Those facts are hard to argue against, it is an abysmal record for McCarthy, and many if not most chairman would not have been so kind as to keep him in a job. 55% of you would have sacked him already, a decision backed by these simple statistics.

Yet there are other facts that warrant for him to stay on in charge, which is how 38% of you feel. Those facts are those that show McCarthy to be a very capable manager in the Championship. A 3rd placed finish and an unlucky play-off defeat in his first Championship season with Sunderland was bettered by a commanding 1st place finish last year.

There are still many Sunderland fans who feel his sacking would only be counter productive in the long run, claiming he is still the best man to take us back up. Should he succeed again however, the question would be, does he warrant another crack at the Premiership?

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Another promotion is still a tough task and one that cannot be taken for granted, even for a club as used to it as we are. A quick look at Derby, Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday shows how sometimes it just doesn’t go to plan.

Regarding this, 7% of you feel McCarthy should be sacked in the summer, with the thinking behind this surely an economical one.

Should McCarthy be sacked now his pay off would be on his current Premiership terms, therefore sacking him as a manager in the Championship would surely be cheaper for a team in millions of pounds of debt.

Another reason for sacking him in the summer as opposed to now would be to prevent a new man from being tarnished with this Premiership disaster side, in much the same way as McCarthy was during the ill-fated 19point season 3 years ago. Installing a new manager just after the season has finished would allow him to start completely afresh, with sights simply on a full Championship season and no meaningless yet harmful Premiership games to deal with.

One thing we can all agree on is that polls like these were certainly not what we all wanted to be voting on at this point in the season. The season has been a disaster and very few positives can be taken from it.

Hopefully the club will reward our undeserved loyalty with sublime football, a gifted and passionate side and another Championship league win next season. Whether we get that one can never tell with SAFC.

**New Poll: Relegation is all but confirmed, once again Sunderland will be in the Championship next season. But where will we finish? Are we equipt to be promoted again? Or do we face another season of misery? Make your vote now and have your say on the forum here.**
