Winger departs…

Sunderland winger Andy Welsh has left the club to join Leicester City on loan until the end of the season.

The nippy left sided player started the season as McCarthy’s first choice left midfielder but slowly lost his way as the struggle and strain of the Premiership got worse for the Black Cats. His last appearance in red and white came in the 3-0 FA Cup victory over Northwich Victoria in January.

Leicester manager Rob Kelly was keen to bring in the 22 year old to help the club in their battle against relegation. He the club’s official website: ‘I first knew of Andy when he was at Stockport County.

‘We had a look while I was at Blackburn, but we were unable to do anything at that time and I’ve followed his progress since.

‘He’s a quick, direct left-sided winger. He’s got a good attitude and I am sure he will help us in our battle against relegation.

‘As soon as we made our interest known he wanted to come here and that’s always pleasing. He’s keen and has an appetite to come and play for us.’

It remains to be seen whether Welsh features in McCarthy’s long term plans, while his performances have not been of the standard required in England’s top division, his promising displays during Sunderland’s successful Championship campaign last year may yet mean Welsh still has a future on Wearside.

Meanwhile speculation surrounds another Sunderland winger, this time recent Ireland international Liam Lawrence. One of the few players to come out of this season with any credit, the right sided midfielder is apparently being courted by Everton, who are apparently set to test the water with a £2million bid in the summer.
