Charis Mavrias is back at Sunderland for the pre-season warm up after a loan spell at Panathinaikos, but this time he wants to fight for a place in the Black Cat’s side.

The winger is keen to show boss Dick Advocaat what he can do as he looks to have a season in the English Premier League.

The Greek has been with Sunderland since 2013 when he joined the club from Panathinaikos, but after making just six appearances, he found himself back at his old club on loan.

Speaking to the Shields Gazette, he said: “This is my third year in Sunderland and the second where I get to be substantially involved in pre-season from the outset.

“I think it`s time to get a chance to show I can count, otherwise if you don`t do this we will see what happens in the future.

“I need to get playing time under my feet and show what I can offer.

“Definitely my priority right now is Sunderland.

But reports say that he is surplus to requirements at the Stadium of Light, they want to sell the player on now while there is still 12 months on his current contract so they can get a fee, although it is not likely that they will be able to recoup the £2.5m Roberto De Fanti paid for another flop under the leadership of Paolo Di Canio.

And the story was no better last season when after Mavrias was considered to be a good bet to make the Sunderland playing squad, he was left out by Gus Poyet.
