There is bad news for Adam Matthews after the Capital One Cup game against Exeter on Tuesday in that the player will be sidelined for around six weeks.

Matthews damaged his ankle in the second half of the 6-3 victory according to the Northern Echo and this will rule him out of the trip to Villa Park on Saturday.

The defender’s absence will open the door for Billy Jones to get back into the side on the right as the side prepare for the final game before the international break.

Elsewhere in the side, Adam Johnson is still unavailable, but Jeremain Lens and Steven Fletcher are ready to go into action.

Dick Advocaat told the publication: ‘Matthews is injured. He will be out for six to eight weeks with an ankle injury.

‘(Adam) Johnson is still out. Everyone else is fit, although (Jordi) Gomez, not quite. He is getting better and better. He played last Wednesday and is improving every day. That is good. Lens is fit, yeah, and Fletcher.’
