Danny Graham has spoken about how he had not given up on getting into the Sunderland side again, despite being out for so long.

On Saturday Graham was picked to start ahead of Steven Fletcher for the game against Swansea at the Liberty Stadium, something that he has not done since March 2013 and follows up his previous four appearances from off the bench.

Graham has impressed all at the Stadium of Light with his displays as sub and it was only a matter of time before Gus Poyet needed to pay him the compliment of a starting place in the side.

And thats a far cry from on loan appearances for the likes of Wolves, Hull and Middlesbrough and a complete turnaround in fortunes for the player who should have been sold in the summer.

Speaking to the Sunderland Echo, Graham said: “It`s been a long time.

“I`ve obviously been on loan at various clubs, but I came back from Wolves, where I got match-fit and sharp, and a lot leaner than I was.

“I`ve been doing well in training and the gaffer`s rewarded me with a start. I thought I did well, but, come the end, I was always going to be blowing. It`s been a while!

“The manager kept an open mind on me which is great. But I never once gave up on my future here.’
