But the likelihood of that permanent stay being with the Black Cats is not really on.
After joining the club from Liverpool for the season in the summer, the player has made just four appearances and even though Liverpool will be looking to get Coates off their books come the end of the season, chances are it won’t be Sunderland who will take him on.
Coates told reporters: ‘During my time in England, I’ve not had as many matches as I wanted.
‘When the year loan is over, I will talk about what to do next.
‘But my goal is to stay in England because it is the best football in the world. It’s a very competitive league.’
