The Yorkshire based referee last took charge of a Sunderland game in August when he officiated the 1-1 draw with Manchester United at the Stadium of Light.
Ashley Young and Tom Cleverely were the only two players booked in the encounter.
So far this season Atkinson has been in charge of 20 games in all competitions and he has shown 75 yellow cards and Two red. One of those red cards came on Boxing Day when he sent off Olivier Giroud at Arsenal.
Atkinson’s assistants will be Stephen Child and Harry Lennard while the fourth official will be Lee Probert.
