Aston Villa host Sunderland on Sunday and both sides will be looking for better results than they got on Boxing Day when Sunderland lost to Hull and Villa lost at Swansea.

Just one point separates the two clubs with Villa sitting one place above Sunderland in 13th place.

Neither side have set the league alight this term so far Villa, after winning three and drawing one of their first four games of the season, they lost six games on the bounce and out of their last 14 games, they have won just two.

Sunderland on the other hand Seem to win a game every so often and draw the rest.

We’d like to say that both sides will be going at it tooth and nail to win this one, but looking back at games so far this season I don’t see the game being exciting at all, they might even draw.

Villa’s manager Paul Lambert was not too upset that his side lost at Swansea, he told reporters after the game: ‘We’ve changed the way we played over the last three or four weeks. There’s new things we’re working on. The lads have been really good with it, they really have. It’s something I have asked them to do and they have been excellent at it. Sometimes you come off the pitch really disappointed because you haven’t played well. But today I am proud of them because of the way they have played. I am disappointed to lose the game but I was proud of the way they played.’

Gus Poyet has been walking around ranting about how many games are played over the Christmas period, but recently fit again Billy Jones said about the game: ‘Villa have Benteke back and he’s a threat when he’s fit and firing, and they’ve got pace in the team. It’s going to be a tough game but we know what we need to do.’

Sunderland are without defenders Anthony Reveillere and Patrick van Aanholt.

Villa will be without the injured Nathan Baker, Philippe Senderos and Ashley Westwood, but may have Joe Cole and Libor Kozak back.

Sunderland haven’t beaten Villa since 2011, two of the last three clashes at Villa Park have ended in goalless draws don’t bank on this one being any different.
