Connor Wickham wants to make himself Sunderland’s number one striker next season after he proved that he had the minerals for the job at the end of last term.

Connor was brought back from a loan spell with Leeds United and charged with the task of scoring the goals that would keep the Black Cats in the top flight. It was a long shot at the time, but Wickham repaid the faith shown in him by Gus Poyet ten fold.

Wickham moved to the Stadium of Light in June 2011 and cost £8 million, but having had to wait so long before he could prove he was well worth the cash, he is determined to make Poyet see that he is is top choice.

He told the Sunderland Echo: ‘The aim is to be the main striker next season. ‘I won’t think about it until I start doing my own training. I’ll take a break, switch off, relax and have a bit of chill-out time.

‘Then I’ll start doing my training and start thinking about it. I’ll make sure I do the right training and make sure I put myself in the manager’s thoughts when we come back.’
