Connor Wickham came on as a substitute last night and straight away made a difference to how Sunderland were performing.

Already two goals down and looking like going out of the Capital One cup, Wickham turned the game around by setting up Jozy Altidore for his first goal for the club.

Soon after he was on the score sheet himself, levelling the game at 2-2, before giving the visitors a repeat dose and making it 3-2.

All there was left was for Adam Johnson to make it four and it was a good few minutes work for Wickham who surely should be considered for a start at the weekend.

The 20 year old told the Chronicle: “We managed to come back and show the right team spirit.

“Maybe it wasn`t the performance that we`re capable of, but a win is a win and the most important thing is we`re still in the hat.”
