Sunderland defender Santiago Vergini says that the mood of the squad after the goalless draw with Aston Villa on Sunday was a disappointed one.

The poor game made it 11 draws for Sunderland so far this season and it could have been so much better after Villa were reduced to ten men when Fabian Delph was sent off early in the second half.

‘Before kickoff we would have probably taken a draw so it is positive from that point of view.’ – Santiago Vergini .

But Sunderland could not make the extra man pay dividends and the points ended up being shared.

Vergini told the club’s official website: ‘We are a little bit disappointed particularly because we ended the game with a one-man advantage so it feels like we should of made the most of it, but we’ve got to think positively and look ahead to the next game on New Year’s Day.

‘It was important not to lose today particularly because of what happened on Boxing Day and we were also playing away from home, so before kickoff we would have probably taken a draw so it is positive from that point of view.’

That game on New Year’s Day is against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
