Sunderland’s hopes of landing Virgil van Dijk from Celtic look to be at an end after the players said he was happy to remain with the Scottish giants.

Poyet has been chasing the centre half for some time now, he has been a big fan since he was the manager at Brighton and had an unsuccessful attempt to prise the player away from Celtic twelve months ago.

Arsenal and Southampton have also shown an interest in the defender and while he could make a move in the summer, it now seems unlikely that a January transfer will take place.

Van Dijk told reporters: ‘Interest is fine, it’s always good to have people watching you but I can do nothing with interest and it looks like Celtic don’t want to sell me so it looks like I’m staying here. ‘I’m happy here of course because Celtic is an amazing club and I love being here.’
