And it would take a fantastic effort to better their position on the first day of 2015 as they face champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, not a game that many would bet on the Black Cats getting something from.
Poyet has to improve his side but admits that although he would love to sign ‘that special player’admits he would love to land “that special player,” chances are he wont find him that easily.
Poyet told Sky Sports: “Everyone is looking for that special player, the one who will do something special for you without needing to train or teach or coach too much but there are not that many so it is very difficult.
“The idea here is to stay calm, know where we are, be realistic and keep working hard. We will try to find players if it is possible, not to panic and set up any target of numbers of players or positions.’
