Sunderland manager Gus Poyet says that Sunday’s victory over Newcastle United at St James Park was ‘totally deserved’.

There was eight bookings in what was a typically hard-fought contest at St James Park.

Adam Johnson won the game for the Black Cats after an 89th minute breakaway just moments after Newcastle had a chance of their own to go in front.

There was seven bookings in what was a typically hard-fought contest up in the north east, and Poyet was delighted with his team’s performance.

The Uruguayan boss told the BBC: ‘To understand what this means you need to live here and be on one side. To see the faces of the people, the fans in the street – they only talk bout this game. It is the biggest present the players could have given – three points over their biggest rivals – and it was totally deserved.’
