Sunderland got off to a pretty poor start at Leicester on Saturday in the season’s opener. Yet they started the game off so well with three early chances to take the lead.

Sadly they came to nothing and the lesson was given in how to take chances inside of ten minutes when Albrighton sent in a ball towards the near post and Vardy looped the ball over the keeper and into the corner of the net.

The fans had hardly done celebrating the first goal when they found themselves close to going two up when Okazaki put in an effort only for the ball to be blocked, but it fell to Marez who fizzed a shot just wide.

But the Marez was on the score sheet a few minutes later when Albrighton put in another dangerous cross for the Frenchman to head home giving Pantillimon no chance.

Sunderland were now getting a bit frustrated with the home side’s play down the right hand side of the park and Marez got the better of Catermole and the Black Cats man brought him down in the box and the referee pointed to the spot.

Marez scored easily from the spot and Sunderland looked down and out.

Marez again was an irritant to what there was of a Sunderland defence and nearly completed a hat-trick five minutes before the break when he got on the end of a highball from Vardy, but this time he fired over the crossbar.

The second half started in pretty much the same way for Sunderland, they were being pegged back by a Leicester side who were out to prove that the results from the latter half of last season were no fluke. Coates could do little to stop Vardy down the left hand side and he saw an effort whizz just past the far post.

After managing to start to contain things at the back, Sunderland got forward and pulled a goal back through Defoe who was the first to react to a loose ball and he fired past Schmeichel to give Sunderland some hope.

But barely seven minutes later and the home side were back to three in front when Coates made an error and Albrighton fired into the corner from just inside the penalty area.

Fletcher grabbed one back for Sunderland as the game drew into its final stages, his goal was due to the fact that he got up higher than the defence and powered a header home.

But it was too much to expect the Black Cats to get back into the game and they left the King Power Stadium a well beaten side.
