Captain Steve Caldwell and striker Stephen Elliot both made successful returns from injury in the reserves’ win at Leeds…

A goal from Tobias Hysen and two from late substitute David Dowson ensured that Dennis Wise would have a lot to think about his new side.

Caldwell played 60 minutes and Elliot 25 minutes, with the former coming straight into contention for the match at Hull this Saturday after Kenny Cunningham’s injury. Elliot is hoping to be back in time for Cardiff’s visit to Sunderland next Tuesday.

Roy Keane would have been happy with what he saw at Leeds’ Thorpe Arch training ground, with all three goals scored in the second half.

Former Leeds youngster Kevin Smith fed through Hysen, who finished well to put Sunderland ahead after 53 minutes.

The score remained the same until the last seven minutes, when sub Dowson scored two goals, finishing rebounds from two shots from the lively Elliot.

Sunderland: Carson (Backhouse 78), Ball, N.
Collins, Caldwell (R. Smith 62), R. Elliott, Mocquet, Arnau, L. Miller (Richardson 62), Hysen (Dowson 78), T. Miller (Dennehy 62), K. Smith (S. Elliott 65)
