Sunderland striker Stephane Sessegnon found himself on the wrong side of the law yesterday when he picked up a fine for speeding.

The 29 year old also got three points on his licence after being clocked doing the breakneck speed of 37 miles an hour in a 30 zone.

The Benin international was picked up by a speed camera back on the 30th of January on Western Terrace in Bolton. He was sent a summons to appear before South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court.

But Sessegnon pleaded guilty by letter at the same time apologising for breaking the law.

Part of the letter read out in court said : “I didn`t realise my speed was over the limit until after.

“When I realised, I reduced it.

“Please accept that it was a genuine error.”

Janice Bellamy, prosecuting, said that the player already had three points on his licence and if he had held a UK licence, he would have been offered a fixed penalty notice of £60.

District Judge Caroline Gouldbourn ordered Sessegnon to pay a fine of £60 and added three more points to his licence.
