Young striker Ryan Noble scored all three as Keith Bertschin’s side dispatched with Newcastle with ease.

Newcastle were never really in the tie and after a scrappy opening period of the game which saw the Black Cats come close on several occasions, Noble struck.

Collecting a pass into the edge of the area the foward planted past Toon ‘keeper Jak Alnwick from just inside the 18 yard box.

The second wasn’t far off and Noble was on hand to bundle home from close-range following a save from Alwnick.

It took just 12 second half seconds for Noble to complete his treble as he raced past the static Magpies’ backline and prodded past the on-rushing Alnwick.

Sunderland saw the job out professionally though they lost winger James McClean to a ‘badly turned ankle’ late on having made all their subs.

Newcastle defender Patrick Nzuzi saw red at the death having hauled down Black Cats forward Roarie Deacon.

Sunderland: Carson; Laing (Marrs), Kilgallon, Egan, Liddle; Lynch (Deacon), Meyler, Knott (Reed), McClean; Cook & Noble.

Subs not used: King (GK) & Elliott.

Newcastle United: Alnwick; Nicholson, Streete, Tavernier, Nzuzi; Adeji (Hooper), Inman, Richardson, Taylor; Edmundsson & Campbell.

Subs not used: Toland, Mitchell (GK), Storey & McGorrigan.
