Gus Poyet was very happy with how his players performed in the Capital One cup quarter final clash with Chelsea last night.

He praised his side for sticking to the plan and not going into panic mode as the game came into its very late stages.

Sunderland were a goal down thanks to a Frank Lampard goal just after half time but they came strong in the end, forcing the goal that took them into extra time from the foot off Fabio Borini.

Ki Sung-Yueng`s goal settled the contest two minutes from the end of extra time.

Poyet told reporters after the game: “It was a matter of belief, a matter of knowing that sooner or later if you keep playing the same way you`re going to get the rewards.

“Of course, we would like to score before but sometimes it`s even better to score at the end because it`s a different flavour.

“It was a typical cup game with goals right at the beginning of the second half, right at the end of the game and right at the end of extra time.’

Manchester City also got themselves into the semi finals last night by beating Leicester City, while tonight Tottenham take on West Ham United and Stoke City face Manchester United.
