Gus Poyet believes that Sunderland’s escape from the drop into the Championship as the greatest ever after beating West Brom last night.

Sunderland became only the second side in Premiership history to escape relegation after being at the bottom of the pile at Christmas.

In fact, only a few weeks ago the Black Cats propped up the rest of the sides then fine performances against Man City and Chelsea set them on their way to pulling of an escape that will be hard to beat.

Unless Norwich can beat Arsenal by an unspeakable amount of goals then they are the ones dropping into the Championship after Jack Colback and Fabio Borini scored the goals that gave Sunderland more than the draw they needed to escape relegation.

The Cats could not have left their escape any later, finding form at exactly the right time under Poyet who has performed a small miracle since he took over from Paolo Di Canio, now Poyet knows that this escape will go down in folklore.

He told reporters: ‘There will be people still talking about this is many, many years’ time.

‘In the future, managers will point to this and say, ‘You can do it, even if you are seven points adrift with six games to go’.

‘I don’t know if something like this will ever happen again, but I believe in miracles now.’

If only we could have had these type of performances at the start of the season, but then again what do you expect with di Canio the tool in charge?
