Gus Poyet is confident that Sunderland can get out of the relegation zone and remain a Premier League outfit for next season.

Poyet was appointed as the new manager of the club on Tuesday and he will be bringing a different style of management that the last boss Paolo Di Canio who was removed from the post a little over two weeks ago.

And Poyet believes that a fresh approach will see results change after the club has gone seven games with only one point to show for their efforts, but he needs to get everyone possible on board.

‘I do believe we can get safe. I need to convince the players, I need to convince everybody to really believe in this and we start today,’ Poyet told reporters at his first news conference.

‘I want to make sure everybody commits to the cause.’

Sunderland have had six managers in the last five years which has not done the club a whole lot of good, but Poyet believes now is the time to bring a bit of stability to the club and given time, give the fans something more to shout about.

He added: ‘I’ve had one job as a manager so far and I was there for four years, so that speaks for itself.

‘Whenever a new manager arrives he wants to stay as long as possible, I am confident but I don’t want to say now we are going to do this and do that, I want to prove it and I hope I will be sitting here smiling at the end of the season.’

The Uruguayan’s first league game is against Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium next week before the lads take on Newcastle.

Wouldn’t be much of a manager if he said he wasn’t confident, he is right about stability though, he needs a fair crack of the whip
