Gus Poyet takes over in the hotseat at Sunderland and admits that he is ‘excited’ about the challenge that he faces in the coming months.

The 45 year old Uruguayan takes command from Kevin Ball straight away and he will be looking to get off to a good start by getting a win at Swansea on his way to keeping the club in the top flight.

The new man has to lift the Black Cats off the foot of the table ASAP, that’s not an easy task after taking just one point from the first seven games.

But there has been signs of life while Kevin Ball had his two week stint as caretaker boss, with improvements all round on the field.

Last season Poyet almost steered Brighton to the Premier League but was beaten in the play-off final by Crystal Palace, who themselves are struggling somewhat.

Poyet said on the club’s official Twitter: ‘It’s a huge challenge but one I am excited about and I am grateful for the opportunity to manage in the Barclays Premier League.

‘I think the key behind my strong home record at Brighton was the connection with the fans – I can see that here also.

‘I look forward to proving my ability to the fans – I want them to believe because we need to stick together.’

Vital Sunderland welcomes the new appointment and are eager to see what Poyet can do in the top flight. He is one of the more talented young managers around and his experience as a player at Tottenham and Chelsea will no doubt wear off on him as a manager in the Premier League.

just hope he will get a serious amount of time to sort things out. no use jumping on his case after just three games if all has not gone right
