Gus Poyet believes that his Sunderland side must get prepared mentally as well as physically for the rest of the season and the fight ahead.

Poyet says that the teams that manage to hold their nerves in the final few weeks of the season are the sides which will avoid the drop into the Championship.

And the Black Cats boss wants to make sure that his side is one which are best equipped for survival and hold mental strength.

Something which they did not manage to do when they went down at Carrow Road at the weekend. In fact, for long periods of the game they were woeful.

Poyet says that there is ten games left and unless they can show the right mentality then the drop will be inevitable.

Ahead of the game at Anfield tonight, Poyet told the Sunderland Echo: “It is all about mentality and character now. It`s not tactical, physical or anything like that.

“It will be the team that has the best mentality that will stay up.

“Of all the teams down at the bottom, we are all playing under the mental stress of fighting relegation for so long.

“It`s about who copes with it the best.

“The teams that cope with it the best, will get out of it.”

A win for Sunderland tonight would take the Black Cats out of the bottom three and dump Crystal Palace in the relegation zone.

Sunderland`s opponents on Monday night, West Ham United, are also in action tonight against Hull City.
