Sunderland boss Gus Poyet was left unsure of his Wembley side after Arsenal walloped his team 4-1 in their final preparation game before the League Cup final.

The display was a poor one and the writing was on the wall from the moment that Arsenal took the lead in the opening few minutes and then added to the score after a shocking back pass a third goal followed before half time and then number four came in the second half.

Arsenal then sat back a little more and Sunderland grabbed a goal back, but it was too little, too late.

Poyet said to reporters: ‘We were very, very poor technically.

‘We did not give good angles and we were not brave enough as a team to pass the ball. If you only come here to defend, sooner or later you are going to concede.

‘Some people concede after 70 and lose the game anyway. We came today and conceded after a few minutes – then it becomes difficult.

‘After that, you cannot make mistakes, but we made a big one, and then it was a very long and difficult afternoon.’

He also reminded people that Arsenal are one of the top sides in the country at the moment.

He added: ‘Let’s not forget it was Arsenal we were playing away from home and they have got quality.

‘You need to be smart enough to slow down the game and organise. You have to be patient and press the ball, but we didn’t.’

Sunderland now sit in 18th place but have a game in hand over a couple of the sides just above them.
