Moyes On Burnley Disappointment

Manager David Moyes has been reflecting on the point picked up against Burnley this weekend and he knew really it hadn’t been enough given the return we need points wise.

Hosting Sean Dyche’s side at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland battled to a scoreless draw on the day but Moyes could certainly take the positives as we had more efforts on and off target and could’ve taken the victory, despite Burnley having a couple of very good chances themselves.

Speaking to the Official Site as he met with the media post game, Moyes knew that we could look at it as a missed opportunity for three points in reality.

‘It was disappointing that we didn`t take three points today because we created some good chances. It was a bit scrappy at times, I can`t say we played overly well but I think Burnley make you play that way because they drag you into the sort of game you don`t want. We had to see tough spells out and we had to dig in at times before we could get going and create opportunities. Thankfully the lads stuck together and we managed to overcome that.’

With the second half period being the pick out, Moyes was pleased with the improvement shown after the half time restart.

‘I certainly thought in the second half we had some chances to score. We wanted all three points today so we are disappointed with just one but we have to use it as a positive because we`ll have to win and draw games between now and the end of the season. The players know exactly how much it means to everyone and what it means to win – we have emphasised it. They didn`t lose but they know it was a real chance to get three points.’

The Sunderland Echo also have Moyes indicating that ultimately the draw was of little use to us because we aren’t playing catch up in the points tally quick enough at the moment.

‘It’s not enough – it would have been down as one of the wins in my book, so now we have to turn one of the draws I had down into a win. The players know exactly how much it means and they know we have to win – but three points was really what we needed.’

Adding.

‘I thought against Burnley it was always going to be difficult. They don’t concede many goals and they have made it difficult for a lot of teams this season. On another day we would have hoped one of the players; Billy, Fabio, Adnan, whoever, would have finished one of the chances.’

The Chronicle also have the gaffer as saying that we are basically at ‘miracle’ point once again – but it’s been done before.

‘We are getting close to needing something special. It`s been done here regularly. Let`s hope. I`m not kidding anyone on – it`ll need some really big results. This was two points dropped. You`d be disappointed if I said no chance. There is a chance. It`s been done. We know it will be difficult.’

Jack Rodwell added that we clearly can’t hope for other sides to do us a favour as teams around us are picking up wins now.

‘That`s the biggest problem. We can`t look at them if we`re not winning ourselves. What they do is irrelevant if we`re not winning. Do we need a miracle? Wins, definitely. But, yeah, whatever you want to call it we need to win games. Last season wasn`t necessarily a worse position, but you look at the teams around us now and the difference is they are all picking up points. The likes of Palace and Hull could quite easily get a win any other week, there are too many points being collected here, there and everywhere and we need to collect them as well to stand a chance. The next time we play (Watford) is a good opportunity for us.’
