David Moyes says that Lamine Kone will be in talks with Sunderland over a new contract next week.
Kone has been a target of Everton for a number of weeks and during the transfer window, the Black Cats turned down a £20 million bid from the Merseyside outfit.
There was talk of Kone demanding to be let go to Everton and being unhappy about a new contract not being offered sooner rather than later.
But Moyes assured the player that Sunderland was the place he should be playing football at and a new deal would be on the table very shortly.
Moyes told reporters: ‘It`s always difficult. I`ve seen it a little bit before.
‘I know what happens, once the window shuts, it changes everything. I hope he will have signed a new contract shortly. I`ve not got the news to say he has yet. But there have been plenty of discussions. I think there are some already pencilled in for next week sometime.
‘We hope to do that. He`s still got four years left on his contract, so it`s not as if we are scraping around because we are short of time.
‘He could have been an Everton player this weekend, but I wanted Kone to stay all the time. There was never any hint that we wanted anything else.’
Kone cost Sunderland £6 million when he arrived from Lorient.
