One of the happy men from Sunday’s victory, Sunderland captain John O’Shea, says that the win over Newcastle will go down in the history books.

The Black Cats easily beat John Carver’s side thanks to a wonder strike from Jermain Defoe as the half time whistle approached.

But a level headed O’Shea was quick to point out that the major thing to come from the game was the three pints picked up to help ease relegation worries.

Speaking to Sunderland’s official website he said: ‘The performance was great but ultimately, like the manager said beforehand, today was about the three points.

‘We’ve been watching the results come in all weekend trying to focus on our preparation for today’s game, and thankfully we did that and we executed the plan perfectly.

‘The job isn’t finished yet and there is a lot more work to do, but it was a step in the right direction and it is great to be able to take this momentum into next weekend’s game against Crystal Palace. To win five derbies in a row is very special and it was a historic moment for the club, so to be part of that was absolute fantastic.’

Sunderland now sit in 15th place in the Premier League table after the win.
