As soon as it was revealed that Mick McCarthy had been sacked by Sunderland names were flying around as to who would replace him as Sunderland manager. Our website poll took the early favourites and asked you who you think will become the next permanent Sunderland manager.
New names such as Niall Quinn, Terry Venables and Lawrie Sanchez have since been linked and a new poll might well be cast, but here are the results of the original poll:

With Martin O’Neil the clear winner there with 54%, it seems the majority have fans have voted with their hearts rather than their heads. With O’Neil courted by both England and Newcastle, it is unlikely the former Celtic manager will be making the move to Wearside, that is even if Bob Murray would even think of making such an ambitious attempt.
The only plus point we have is the close affinity O’Neil has with Sunderland from his childhood following some of Sunderland’s Irish players. Whether this could quite compete with the money and prestige of the other offers on the table for O’Neil is doubtful however!
Mcleish was the second choice from that list, the Rangers manager set to leave his post at the end of the season and is said to be looking for a job in England. However with 14% of you voting ‘other’ the poll was clearly not comprehensive enough for all the recent additions to the candidate list, with Niall Quinn, most significantly, among many others to join the list.
