An overwhelming majority agreed with Sunderland’s decision to release captain Gary Breen in last week’s poll…

After an awful season back in the Premiership, Sunderland look to rebuild for another season in the Championship, and the first high profile casualty of the clear out was captain Gary Breen as he was last week told he would not be getting a new contract.

One of McCarthy’s first signings at the club, Breen made 115 appearances for the Black Cats following his free transfer move in 2003. However following such a torrid season back in the Premiership, Sunderland decided not to renew the 32-year old’s contract this summer.

Asked whether you agreed with this decision, a massive 95% of you felt the decision to let Breen go was correct,

Were Sunderland right to release Gary Breen?
-Yes 95%
-No 5%

The results will come as no real surprise to many, as it was widely agreed that Breen’s time at the club should come to an end, after such a disappointing season resulted in his relationship with fans becoming detached and frosty, as his displays on the pitch and his position as captain were questioned by the Sunderland faithful.

This week’s poll concerns another player who may be leaving Wearside, only this time it may be of greater concern to Sunderland fans than Breen’s departure.

Promising young goalkeeper Ben Alnwick has handed in a transfer request following Sunderland’s relegation from the Premiership. Do you think he has made the right decision?
