Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has started a clear out of players that he deems to be surplus to requirements next season and Andrea Dossena is the first player to go.

Loanee Ki Sung-Yueng has also been allowed to leave early so he can join up with his country in preparation for the World Cup, while other players who’s contracts are up are being spoken to.

32 year old defender Dossena joined the Black Cats on a free transfer last summer after he was released by Fiorentina.

But the player only pulled on a Sunderland shirt 11 times this season and only seven of those were league appearances, he did not help himself very much by getting a red card in the game against Hull by stamping on David Meyler at the KC Stadium.

Dossena looked more and more unlikely to get a place in the side with the arrival of Marcos Alonso in January. And Dossena slipped further down the pecking order with the boss preferring Ondrej Celustka, Phil Bardsley and even Jack Colback.
