Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew has admitted that he attempted to sign Sunderland target Jermain Defoe but was unsuccessful in his quest.

Pardew wanted the 32 year old striker to join Palace ahead of the Black Cats but had to admit than any chance he had is now long gone.

‘We tried to get Defoe, but probably a bit late in the loop on that one. – Alan Pardew

The former Newcastle boss would have liked Defoe to go alongside loan signing Yaya Sanogo, who they have landed from Arsenal.

Going further, Pardew also had to admit that the signing of Defoe would likely see the end of the relegation threat that the Wearsiders are going through at the moment.

Pardew told reporters: ‘I think it’s a good move for Sunderland to have secured Jermain, I think he’s a goalscorer and Gus (Poyet) will be the first to tell you they need more goals.

‘So it’s a good signing for them.

‘We tried to get Defoe, but probably a bit late in the loop on that one.

‘I wouldn’t say we were that close, no.

‘It never really got to the stage where I got to speak to Jermain, so I would say we were not that close.’

Its amazing how much more I like Pardew now he has gone from the barcodes, I couldn’t bare to look at his face before but now he has become just another manager who is struggling to compete with the big boys and probable never will. That doesnt mean I hope Palace do well under him, ********* to Palace.
