Sunderland will have an anxious few days waiting to see if Jermain Defoe will be fit to face West Brom on Saturday.

Defoe was left out of the squad for the trip to Bradford in he FA Cup and many thought he was merely being rested, but it has now come to light that the striker was suffering from a calf injury that has been hampering the players since his transfer from America to Sunderland.

Up until Sunday Defoe had played in every game for the Black Cats but now it is reported that the 32 year old missed training on the Saturday.

Sundrland wont know until towards the end of the week whether Defoe will be fit for Saturday as he will miss Tuesday’s training session.

Poyet told reporters: “Jermain had a problem with his calf and didn`t train properly on Saturday.

“He`s going to be off for three or four days.

“If people think we were going to take him to Bradford to play injured, then they`re wrong.

“I`m not sure yet if he`ll be okay for next week.”
