Comment: Who’s to blame?

So Mick and Bob have kissed and made up. It was all a ‘big misunderstanding’ we’re led to believe. What does this all mean for Sunderland AFC?

It seems like the war of the words between Mick McCarthy and Bob Murray is all over, with Mick claiming his words had been ‘misconstrued’. After Mick had seemingly admitted what most of us already thought, that Sunderland had planned for immediate relegation back to the championship, Murray blasted back stating this was all nonsense.

McCarthy has since backed down claiming that he was misrepresented and is ‘let down and hurt’ by the reports. Sunderland fans are frankly a bit perplexed what to make of it all. Though nothing surprises us anymore.

If Mick had stood by his comments and defended his corner, in an attack on the club’s pathetic transfer policy, it is feasible that the majority of supporters would back him, laying the blame on Murray and the unambtious board of directors.

However now that McCarthy has backed down, presumably in order to keep his job, he has left himself with no excuses; ‘Never did I imply that I hadn’t been given enough funds or that we had bought players to go down with’.

In refusing to criticise the transfer policy and by backing his chairman, McCarthy has put himself in a position where he can only blame himself for the embarrassing fiasco this season has been. If Mick now backs his chairman and claims we didn’t plan to go straight back down after all, then why have we performed so badly? Who is to blame?

As most would agree, it has of course been a disaster from all positions at the club, from the chairman and the board, to McCarthy, not forgetting of course the players.

As usual it’s the fans who’ve had to pay the price and it’s not over yet. Is OUR team going to be the worst ever in top-flight history? It’s looking evermore likely.

Something must be done. We’ve been in this scenario way too many times for this to simply be a blip, or an unfortunate one-off error. Another manager would simply paper over the large cracks that are breaking Sunderland Football Club apart; this club needs a complete overhaul, from the chairman to the tea lady.
