Sunderland chief executive Margaret Byrne has spoken about the sacking of Paolo Di Canio, saying that the decision was not down to player power.

On Sunday night there were all sorts of rumours doing the round; including one that said the manager had lost the support of the players.

But Byrne insists that the decision to remove Di Canio from his post was purely down to the fact that things were not working and every week the club got nearer to relegation, something that needed to be acted upon.

She said to reporters: ‘After Paolo saved us from relegation last season, we gave him an opportunity to take the club forward this season.

‘When it became obvious it wasn`t working, we had to take the decision to part company with him. We felt it was better to do this now as we ran the risk of being cut adrift at the bottom.`
