Former boss Steve Bruce has denied that he is set to swoop for Sunderland striker Frazier Campbell on-loan.

The 24 year-old forward has fallen down the pecking order at the club following injury, with Louis Saha and Steven Fletcher being added to the striking corps this summer.

However, despite reports to the contrary, Bruce has denied that he is looking to take the one-time Hull City forward back to the club on-loan.

Speaking to The Shields Gazette, Bruce said of the potential deal:

“As far as I am aware, Fraizer is not available to loan at present.

“If he was available, of course we would ask the question. But at this time, that`s not the case.”

Black Cats’ boss Martin O’Neill had previously said that he expected Campbell to stay put and fight for a place in the starting XI:

“I know he`s in the final year of his contract, we have signed some players and it is a battle to get into the team.

“But if he`s at this football club, then I`m hoping he will go and fight for a place in the team.”
