Sam had to admit that the advantage was in their favour after Fabrico Coloccini was shown the red card.
But the win was the sixth on the bounce against the Barcodes and in beating them Sunderland showed that under the right leadership, the Black Cats could easily achieve a strong mid-table finish after a bad start to the season.
And Sam has warned his players that they must keep up their efforts to escape another relegation battle come the end of the season.
The Press Association quote the Sunderland boss as saying: ‘We have got a lot of work to do. We have got to be a lot better than we were today. Enjoy the victory, yes lads and well done, but we need to get a lot better than the performance we showed today, for me, if we are going to get out of trouble and get into mid-table.
‘But for me, I am going to be pushing the lads hard to get better than even this performance today. That might sound a bit harsh, but we need to get better.’
