Phil Bardsley has been talking about how breaking his leg in the summer could have done him a big favour.

Bardsley was no fan of Di Canio and the Italian didn’t like him much either and the boss told he that he would be training with the reserves as his career at Sunderland was over.

And with that the full back looked set to move away, possibly to a Championship side as there was a number of clubs interested from the second tier.

However, Bardsley suffered a broken foot during an outing for Sunderland`s Under-21s, putting him out of action for at least ten weeks thus losing the interest from clubs who wanted him.

But when the time came that he was fit again to play, Di Canio had been given the boot, Poyet was then appointed and he re-called the bad boy.

Bardsley told the Echo: “When I broke my foot in a daft challenge, I remember thinking at the time ‘Can this get any worse?

“People at the club said to me it was the best thing that has happened to me at the football club because I could have been on my way out. That’s a nice little thing for people to say. It hurt though!”
