Anton Ferdinand has been convicted of driving a vehicle whilst texting on his mobile phone and was due to appear at court for his sentencing.

However, Ferdinand did not show up at Newcastle Magistrates` Court on Monday and the Northumbria Police issued a warrant for his arrest.

Sunderland are now working closely with the police in order to get this warrant rescinded and he can avoid being locked up for the offence.

The force spokesman said: “There has been no arrest at this stage. A warrant has been issued and we are aware.”

The offence in question occurred on the morning of July 13 when Ferdinand was seen in his white Range Rover on Newcastle’s Central Motorway.

The former West Ham and England Under-21 international was travelling from his home at Baltic Quays in Gateshead to Newcastle International Airport, where he needed to catch a flight ahead of a pre-season friendly.

Ferdinand has denied being informed he needed to attend the court and expects the matter to be cleared ASAP so he can focus on training for the Blackburn game on Monday evening.
