Sunderland go into tonight’s game with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium knowing that they are the overwhelming underdogs. In fact they have not won away at City since 1981.

City will be looking to collect the three points to close the gap on top placed Liverpool who beat them at the weekend in a five goal thriller.

City have two games in hand over Liverpool and they know they must win all games and hope that the Scousers slip up as they bid for their second Premiership title.

Sunderland know that they have got to take advantage of their two games that they have in hand and come away with something from tonight’s encounter, a win if at all possible.

The two clubs of course met at Wembley just a few weeks ago in the League Cup final that City eventually ran out comfortable winners after the Black Cats had taken the lead.

Yaya Tourre was one of the better players on the field that afternoon and he even scored one of the goals that gave City the win, but he will be missing from the Blues line up tonight.

He picked up an injury against Liverpool so that’s one goal scoring threat out of the running.

But Sunderland go into the game short on players and they have lost seven out of their last eight games. Morale is pretty low as well with even the manager saying that a miracle is needed to stay up. And on top of City and Chelsea games coming back to back, they have also got to face an improving Manchester United side.

When the two sides met at the Stadium of Light earlier in the season, Phil Bardsley scored the only goal of the game as Sunderland ran out shock winners.

Whatever happened that night needs to happen again tonight.
