Sunderland have signed Manchester United defender Phil Bardsley for a fee that can rise to as much a 2 million.

The 22 year old right back has signed a three and half year contract at the Stadium of Light.

Bardsley told safc.com “Sunderland have a fantastic manager who has given me the chance to come here and play. I’m delighted, it’s a massive club and a good opportunity.”

At last a decent right back?? Hopefully Whitehead will get more game in the middle of the park where he is more effective I my opinion

I have read a lot of posts regarding Bardsley being the answer to our problem RB position. Is it just me or is he not a CB primarily who plays RB if required? We already have Nugsy or Shaggy can do that. Wouldnt surprise me to see him playing CB with Evans and moving Nugsy to RB where he can do less damage with his drag backs?

Bardsley looked a decent defender for us (SUFC). His distribution isn’t the best though and the thing that really got to Blades fans was his unwillingness to EVER run back when caught out of position. Maybe Keane will get more out of him but he looks expensive at that price. Think he’s too short to play at CB.
