Sunderland travel to Craven Cottage on Tuesday knowing that they will have to be in better form than they was in the original meeting between the two sides.

The last game was a dire affair and Sunderland are only still in the competition because of the width of the post which Fulham hit late in the game.

This time around Fulham will give a late test to Scott Parker who missed the draw a fortnight ago, but recovered from an ankle knock to be able to take his place in the side that lost at Blackburn at the weekend.

Manager Kit Symons said: ‘Scotty’s struggling a little bit with injury and illness, so he’s one who might be struggling.’

On-loan Swansea defender Jazz Richards plays no part as he is cup-tied.

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet will be without midfielder Lee Cattermole who will be out of action for a further two weeks after having a scan on his knee.

Poyet is likely to make some changes with defender John O’Shea likely to be rested following Wes Brown’s return to training.

There could also be chances for midfielders Ricky Alvarez and Emanuele Giaccherini.

Sunderland Squad: Pantilimon, Mannone, Jones, Van Aanholt, O’Shea, Brown, Vergini, Coates, Bridcutt, Gomez, Larsson, Buckley, Alvarez, Giaccherini, Wickham, Fletcher, Defoe, Graham.
