Manager David Moyes has bemoaned a slow start against former club Manchester United when Sunderland faced them on Sunday.
Hosting Jose Mourinho’s side at the Stadium of Light for the game in front of the cameras, Sunderland found themselves a goal and a player down by the half time break with Seb Larsson being shown a straight red card two minutes before the break, and with that advantage United built on it with two second half goals to take a three nil win.
Speaking to the Official Site in his post game press conference, Moyes’ main disappointed was in seeing the side slip to a third straight defeat as ten points behind Hull City – albeit with a game in hand on them – doesn’t look pretty.
‘It is very disappointing that we have not taken anything from the game. There were some mitigating circumstances for it as well and because of that we lost. I don`t want to shout about that (red card) but things didn`t go for us today.’
He went on to say.
‘We had gone a goal down which from my point of view was a poor goal to concede. We didn`t get tight enough when Ibrahimovic cut inside and because of that we were chasing it. I didn`t think we had started the game too well. We had stood off Manchester United too much and didn`t get close to them but we began to grow into the game and we had moments when we looked a bit better. Victor had an opportunity and on another day it could`ve been a penalty.’
Sky Sports also have Moyes confirming that they will look at an appeal for Larsson.
‘We’ll have a look at it. I’ve had a look at it, so don’t worry about that. I don’t want to make you think it’s the referee’s fault, it’s not that. But he gets the ball, he touches the ball. There’s no contact at all, so it’s not even a booking. What I don’t want to do is in any way blame the referees because our position is where we are, we are bottom of the league, so let me make that clear first of all, it’s nothing to do with referees. But I didn’t think it was a good decision.’
As for the future, Moyes knew we could simply just keep fighting.
‘We keep fighting, we keep going. We need to give the supporters and everybody that little bit of hope. It’s still as difficult – probably more difficult because there’s a game less. The game less means it’s tougher. There’s no hiding the fact that we’re in a difficult position. But we’ve got a home game next, let’s see if we can get some momentum, try to get a win in that and we’ll try to do that.’
